Life#
Ahmet Kazım Efendi was born in Edirne in 1866/67 (AH 1283) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Ahmet Kazım began work in Svilengrad (Cisr-i Mustafapaşa) in 1892/93, at about 26, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1892/93, places Ahmet Kazım in Svilengrad as Muvassil. The annual lists then follow Ahmet Kazım to six places in 13 years, from Soufli (Sofulu) to İğneada, with a rise to transport official (Nakliye Memuru) in 1896/97 and to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1901/02. The last post was in Coke in 1906/07.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to 500 in 1901/02, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Kofçaz, when half the paid officials earned less. In all, 14 years of salary come to 45,480 kuruş, 55 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
