Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1870/71 (AH 1287), Hasan Sabri Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a district governor or lieutenant colonel (kaymakam). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 22, in 1892/93, Hasan Sabri began work in Kosova, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1892/93, places Hasan Sabri in Kumanovo (Kumanova) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Hasan Sabri to Soufli (Sofulu), Edirne and Karacaali from 1894 to 1899, with a rise to Muhabere Memuru in 1895/96. The last post was in Ardino (Eğridere) in 1899/1900.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to a peak of 475 in 1899/1900, as Muhabere Memuru in Ardino, when 45 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, eight years of salary come to 35,100 kuruş, 73 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1899/1900.
