Life#
Born in Trabzon in 1870/71 (AH 1287) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hacı Ahmet Cevdet Efendi was the child of an inspector (müfettiş). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 21, in 1891/92, Ahmet Cevdet began work in Trabzon, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1892/93, with Ahmet Cevdet as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Erzincan. Next came a return to Trabzon, the birthplace, from 1893 to 1903, with a rise to acting director (Müdür Vekili) in 1902/03. The last posts were in Doğubayazıt (Bayezid) and Foča (Foça) from 1904 to 1908 and Ünye from 1908 to 1910, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1904/05.
The salary went from 380 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to 850 in 1904/05, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Doğubayazıt, when 83 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1909/10.
