Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1870/71 (AH 1287) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ahmet Vasıf Efendi was the child of a soldier (asker). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ahmet Vasıf also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Ahmet Vasıf began work in Alaçam in 1887/88, at about 17, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1892/93, with Ahmet Vasıf as a postal official (Posta Memuru) in Serres (Siroz), where the entries run to 1895/96. Ahmet Vasıf then moved to Drama, Bitola (Manastır) and Peja (İpek) from 1896 to 1904, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1900/01 and to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1903/04. The last post was in Kilimli in 1906/07.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to a peak of 600 in 1903/04, as 3. Müdür in Peja, when two in three paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 400 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
