Life#
Mustafa Hakkı Efendi was born in Damascus (Şam) in 1844/45 (AH 1260) into the Kıpti (as recorded) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 28, in 1872/73, Mustafa Hakkı began work in Damascus, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 170 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1874/75, with Mustafa Hakkı as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Damascus, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1879/80. Mustafa Hakkı then moved to Suriye and Beirut (Beyrut) from 1880 to 1883, with a rise to chief official (Başmemur) in 1880/81, then back to Damascus from 1883 to 1898, with a rise to postal official (Posta Memuru) in 1885/86. The last posts were in Suriye again from 1898 to 1905, first as Posta Memuru, from 1903/04 in the clerkship of the chief director's office (Başmüdür Kitabeti).
