Life#
Born in Nevşehir in 1844/45 (AH 1260), Abdullah Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Cekmece-i Kebir in 1869/70, at about 25, paid from the start, on 166 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1869/70, places Abdullah in Büyükçekmece (Çekmece-i Kebir) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1871/72. The annual lists then follow Abdullah back to Nevşehir, the birthplace, from 1872 to 1876, with a rise to sergeant (Çavuş), then Karaman and Konya from 1876 to 1879, with a rise to Muhabere Memuru in 1876/77. Next came a return to Nevşehir from 1879 to 1886, then five places in 15 years. The last posts were in Şereflikoçhisar (Koçhisar) from 1901 to 1904. Few officials served in as many places; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
Pay rose from 166 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to a peak of 500 in 1877/78, as Muhabere Memuru in Konya, when 36 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 36 years of salary come to 166,884 kuruş, 74 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
