Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1844/45 (AH 1260) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community, Bagdik Maksut Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Bagdik Maksut had four years of schooling, at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi), and wrote Turkish and spoke Armenian and French.
Work began in Istanbul in 1868/69, at about 24, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1869/70, with Bagdik Maksut as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Aleppo (Halep). Next came Svishtov in 1870/71, then Babadag (Babadağ) from 1872 to 1877. The annual lists then follow Bagdik Maksut to Varna in 1877/78. For 1878 to 1880 the lists have no entry. From 1880 to 1904 the annual entries place Bagdik Maksut in Istanbul, the birthplace, first as an official (Memur), from 1895/96 in the control office (Kontrol Kalemi).
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to 550 in 1903/04, the peak, in the Kontrol Kalemi in Istanbul, when 65 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 32 years of salary come to 173,400 kuruş, 87 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
