Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1844/45 (AH 1260) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hasan Sezai Efendi was the child of an official of the Imperial Council (divan-ı hümayun memuru). At about 21, in 1865/66, Hasan Sezai began work in Istanbul, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1868/69, with Hasan Sezai as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Bandırma. Hasan Sezai then moved to four places in seven years, then Cizre from 1878 to 1884. Next came Mosul (Musul) and Mithymna (Molova) from 1884 to 1888, then Foča (Foça) from 1889 to 1896. The last posts were in Erbil and Medina (Medine) from 1896 to 1903 and Suq al-Shuyukh (Sukuşşuyuh) in 1905/06, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1896/97 and to director of the first grade (1. Müdür) in 1901/02. In all, 12 places on two continents, a number reached by fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service. Entries spanning 39 years are rare, reached by fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1868/69 to 1,500 in 1901/02, the peak, as 1. Müdür in Medina, when 94 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
