Life#
Born in Cerkezistan in 1844/45 (AH 1260), Abdullah Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Abdullah had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 21, in 1865/66, Abdullah began work in Constanța (Köstence), paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1865/66, places Abdullah in Constanța as a deliverer (Müvezzi), where the entries run to 1870/71. Abdullah then moved to Çiçekdağı (Mecidiye) from 1871 to 1876, with a rise to sergeant (Çavuş), then Tulcea (Tulça) from 1876 to 1878, with a rise to Bascavus in 1876/77. From 1878 to 1890 every annual entry places Abdullah in Al-Rai (Çobanbey).
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1865/66 to 500 in 1876/77, the peak, as Bascavus in Tulcea, when 36 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 25 years of salary come to 90,780 kuruş, 55 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1889/90.
