Life#
Corci Efendi was born in Damascus (Şam) in 1844/45 (AH 1260) into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Corci also wrote French as well as Turkish.
Work began in Beirut (Beyrut) in 1868/69, at about 24, paid from the start, on 250 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1875/76 to 1878 places Corci in Beirut, first as an official (Memur), from 1876/77 as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to a peak of 400 in 1876/77, as Muhabere Memuru in Beirut, when 17 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, four years of salary come to 17,400 kuruş, 63 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1878.
