Life#
Mustafa Fahri Efendi was born in Mudurnu in 1846/47 (AH 1263) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Mustafa Fahri began work in Mudurnu in 1869/70, at about 22, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 450 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1875/76, places Mustafa Fahri in Nallıhan as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1877/78. From 1878 to 1898 every annual entry places Mustafa Fahri in Mudurnu, the birthplace. Of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more, fewer than 10 per cent kept one title throughout.
