Life#
Born in Sivas in 1846/47 (AH 1263), Süleyman Sırrı Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Süleyman Sırrı also attended the telegraph school.
Work began in Sivas in 1867/68, at about 20, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1875/76, places Süleyman Sırrı in Bosna as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Süleyman Sırrı then moved to Tuzla, Bosna, Ioannina (Yanya) and Adapazarı, four places in six years. The last post was in Incili in 1881/82.
The salary went from 380 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to 600 in 1878/79, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Ioannina, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 285 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1881/82.
