Life#
Agop Efendi was born in Sivas in 1845/46 (AH 1262) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Agop also wrote Armenian and spoke Greek (Rum).
At about 26, in 1872/73, Agop began work in Izmir (İzmir), with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1876/77, places Agop in Izmir as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur), where the entries run to 1889/90. Agop then moved to Akhisar from 1890 to 1898, then Serres in 1898/99. The annual lists then follow Agop back to Akhisar from 1900 to 1903. The last posts were in Aydın in 1903/04 and Tire in 1904/05.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to 675 in 1898/99, the peak, as Seyyar Memur in Serres, when 76 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 400 kuruş. Over 29 years pay ended where it began, at 300 kuruş; fewer than 7 per cent of the 2,010 officials paid for 15 years or more ended as low. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
