Life#
Born in Nevşehir in 1856/57 (AH 1273), Mehmed Hazım Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 18, in 1875/76, Mehmed Hazım began work in Izmir (İzmir), with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1876/77, with Mehmed Hazım as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Izmir, where the entries run to 1884/85. Mehmed Hazım then moved to Acibadem from 1885 to 1890, then Burdur from 1890 to 1893. The annual lists then follow Mehmed Hazım to Eğirdir from 1893 to 1898. The last posts were in Ankara from 1898 to 1902. Of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more, fewer than 10 per cent kept one title throughout.
The salary went from 380 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to 500 in 1885/86, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Acibadem, when 42 per cent of paid officials earned less.
