Life#
Kostantin Efendi was born in Silivri in 1845/46 (AH 1262) into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a special school (Mekteb-i Mahsusa); Kostantin also wrote French and Greek (Rum) and spoke Turkish.
Work began in Ayvalık in 1865/66, at about 19, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. Fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for seven years or longer. The annual lists begin in 1872/73, with Kostantin as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Izmir (İzmir), where the entries run to 1886/87. From 1887 to 1898 the annual entries place Kostantin in Çanakkale. A career like this is rare; fewer than 10 per cent of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more kept one title throughout.
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1872/73 to a peak of 750 in 1895/96, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Çanakkale, when 76 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 684 kuruş. In all, 27 years of salary come to 179,976 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years.
