Life#
Born in Izmir (İzmir) in 1834/35 (AH 1250), Mehmet Şükrü Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Mehmet Şükrü had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Izmir in 1860/61, at about 26, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. From 1864/65 to 1895/96 every annual entry places Mehmet Şükrü in Izmir, the birthplace, first as a postal official (Posta Memuru), from 1876/77 as a director of the first grade (1. Müdür), from 1879/80 as a director of the second grade (2. Müdür) and from 1889/90 as 1. Müdür. Only 11 per cent of the 775 officials whose entries span 30 years or more stayed in one place throughout.
