Life#
Sadık Efendi was born in Trabzon in 1834/35 (AH 1250), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Beyşehir in 1865/66, at about 31, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. Few began so late; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 31 or older. The annual lists begin in 1866/67, with Sadık as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Turhal. Sadık then moved to five places in 13 years, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1878, then Gürün from 1886 to 1894. The annual lists then follow Sadık back to Trabzon, the birthplace, from 1894 to 1897. The last posts were in Ladik from 1897 to 1904. Nine places on two continents in all, a number reached by fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
The salary went from 500 kuruş a month in 1866/67 to 900 in 1871/72, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Nevşehir, when three in four paid officials earned less. Over 32 years pay ended where it began, at 500 kuruş. After the last annual entry, for 1903/04, the list of 1904/05 (AH 1322) gives the status word Vefat (death).
