Life#
Huseyin Mazhar Efendi was born in Manisa in 1836/37 (AH 1252), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in the Defteri Hakani Kalemi in Manisa in 1863/64, at about 27, on a first salary of 1,000 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1866/67, places Huseyin Mazhar in Aydın in the land office (Arazi Kalemi), where the entries run to 1868/69. Huseyin Mazhar then moved to Manisa in 1869/70, then Erzincan from 1870 to 1876. Next came Sivas from 1876 to 1879, then Çankırı from 1879 to 1893. The last posts were in Kütahya from 1893 to 1898.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 1,000 kuruş a month in 1866/67, in the Arazi Kalemi in Aydın, when two in three paid officials earned less. Over 33 years pay ended below where it began, 684 kuruş against 1,000; fewer than 7 per cent of the 2,010 officials paid for 15 years or more ended as low. The list of 1898/99 (AH 1316) gives the status word Vefat (death). Huseyin Mazhar probably has an entry in "Sicill-i Ahval kayıtlarına göre Manisa doğumlu memurlar (1879-1909)" by NİZAM BERKAN MERCAN (2025) (the name, the birthplace, the archive register and page and a place of service agree).
