Life#
Born in Harput in 1836/37 (AH 1252), Ahmet Hamdi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Ahmet Hamdi began work in Harput in 1859/60, at about 23, on a first salary of 250 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1859/60, with Ahmet Hamdi in the Zabita Kitabeti in Harput, the birthplace. Ahmet Hamdi then moved to Erzurum and Yozgat from 1862 to 1871, then Adana from 1871 to 1879. Next came Şanlıurfa (Urfa), Idlib (İdlib) and Kozan from 1879 to 1885, with a rise to Sancak Muhasebecisi in 1884/85. The last posts were in Kozan again from 1886 to 1888. In place of a title the lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1860/61 and Infisal for 1865/66.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1859/60 to a peak of 2,000 in 1868/69, as Rusumat Mudur Muavini in Yozgat, when nine in ten paid officials earned less. Over 25 years the salaries add up to 469,500 kuruş, 2.9 times what an official on the median salary earned, a level reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more. The final annual entry is for 1887/88.
