Life#
Esad Efendi was born in Harput in 1835/36 (AH 1251) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Work began in Harput in 1858/59, at about 23, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1860/61, places Esad in Harput, the birthplace, as a sergeant (Çavuş), where the entries run to 1862/63. The annual lists then follow Esad to nine places in 18 years, then back to Kahramanmaraş from 1881 to 1884. Next came five places in nine years. The last posts were in Osmaniye from 1893 to 1895. Few officials served in as many places; 17 of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did. The farthest post, Misrata, lay about 2,300 km from Harput, and fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1860/61 to a peak of 1,000 in 1890/91, as 2. Müdür in Misrata, when 86 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 600 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1894/95. Esad probably has an entry in "Sicill-i ahvâl defterlerine göre Harputlu devlet adamları" by ENES MUTLUAY (2018) (the name, the birthplace, the archive register and second number and a place of service agree).
