Life#
Hüseyin Hüsnü Efendi was born in Bitlis in 1839/40 (AH 1255) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Hüseyin Hüsnü also wrote Turkish and had some knowledge of Arabic and Persian.
Hüseyin Hüsnü began work in Sivas in 1858/59, at about 19, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1858/59, places Hüseyin Hüsnü in Sivas as Hat Memuru. The annual lists then follow Hüseyin Hüsnü to Harput from 1859 to 1865, with a rise to sergeant (Çavuş), then Pazarcık from 1865 to 1873. Next came Sivas, Çankırı and Samsun from 1873 to 1880, then Çorum from 1880 to 1901. The last post was in Beypazarı in 1901/02. Entries spanning 45 years are rare, reached by fewer than 1 per cent of the 5,211 officials. Few officials served in as many provinces; fewer than 7 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1858/59 to a peak of 500 in 1878, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Samsun, when one in three paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1901/02.
