Life#
Mehmet Kamil Efendi was born in Bursa in 1840/41 (AH 1256) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Mehmet Kamil worked unpaid for two years as a mülazım (apprentice). The annual lists begin in 1858/59, with Mehmet Kamil in the Land Registry office (Defter-i Hakani Kalemi) in Bursa, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1860/61. Mehmet Kamil then moved to Shumen (Şumnu) from 1861 to 1878, with a rise to a post in the land office (Arazi Kalemi), then Beirut (Beyrut) from 1878 to 1890, with a rise to a post in the Defter-i Hakani Kalemi. The last entries, from 1890 to 1899, name Mehmet Kamil in the Defter-i Hakani Kalemi, with no place. Few careers in the lists are as long; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,211 officials have entries spanning 42 years or more.
