Life#
Born in Bursa in 1839/40 (AH 1255), Haci Nazmi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army major (binbaşı). At about 21, in 1860/61, Nazmi began work in the Gumruk Kalemi in Izmir (İzmir), with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1860/61, with Nazmi in the Gumruk Kitabeti in Izmir. Nazmi then moved to Shkodër in 1865/66. From 1866 to 1880 the annual entries place Nazmi in Bursa, the birthplace, first as a customs official (Rüsumat Memuru), from 1870/71 as Rusumat Muhasebe Memuru, from 1878 as an official (Memur) and from 1878/79 as Rusumat Baskitabeti.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1860/61 to 1,000 in 1874/75, the peak, as Rusumat Muhasebe Memuru in Bursa, when four in five paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1879/80. Nazmi probably has an entry in "Sicill-i Ahval defterlerine göre Bursalı memurlar" by DERVİŞ ŞAFAK TOPRAK (2019) (the name, the birthplace, the archive register and second number and a place of service agree).
