Life#
Mehmet Ziya Efendi was born in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1838/39 (AH 1254) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1853/54, Mehmet Ziya began work in the Gumruk Kalemi in Thessaloniki, on a first salary of 100 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1853/54, with Mehmet Ziya as Gumruk Muhasebe Memuru in Thessaloniki, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1858/59. From 1861 to 1883 the annual entries place Mehmet Ziya again in Thessaloniki. In place of a title the lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1859/60.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1853/54 to 1,200 in 1878, the peak, as Rusumat Muhasebe Memuru in Thessaloniki, when 84 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 29 years of salary come to 230,700 kuruş, 1.2 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1882/83.
