Life#
Mustafa Habip Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1838/39 (AH 1254) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a sheikh (şeyh). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Unpaid work as a mülazım (apprentice) lasted one year. The first annual entry, for 1853/54, places Mustafa Habip in Istanbul, the birthplace, as Mazbata Memuru, where the entries run to 1867/68. From 1868 to 1897 the annual entries place Mustafa Habip in Beyoğlu, with six changes of title, from Meclisi Temyiz Baskani to Islahati Adliye Komisyn Baskani in 1888/89. Few careers in the lists are as long; fewer than 1 per cent of the 5,211 officials have entries spanning 45 years or more.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1853/54 to a peak of 15,000 in 1876/77, as Culus-i Humayun in Beyoğlu. In 1876/77, from 1878 to 1881 and from 1883 to 1887 no official in the lists was paid more; only 16 of the 5,203 officials with a salary were ever the best paid of a year. In all, 45 years of salary come to 3,420,000 kuruş, 12.1 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years, a level reached by 8 of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more. The last annual entry is for 1896/97.
