Life#
Artin Aram Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1838/39 (AH 1254) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Beyoglu Mutasarrifligi idare Meclisi". In all Artin Aram knew five languages, Armenian, English and French in writing and Greek (Rum) and Turkish in speech; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many. Of the 5,146 officials with a school, no other studied at Kolej Murad Mektebi.
Artin Aram began work in Istanbul in 1858/59, at about 20, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 1,250 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1859/60, with Artin Aram as Veznadar in Istanbul, the birthplace. Next came five places in 11 years, then a return to Baghdad from 1872 to 1876. Artin Aram then moved to Beyoğlu, Istanbul and Aleppo (Halep) from 1876 to 1882, then Aydın from 1882 to 1891. The last posts were in Istanbul again from 1891 to 1896, first as Telgraf ve Posta Nezareti Tahsilat Muduriyeti, from 1892/93 as Ecnebi Postalari Mufettisi.
Pay rose from 1,250 kuruş a month in 1859/60 to a peak of 4,000 in 1870/71, as Müfettiş in Basra, when 97 per cent of paid officials earned less. After the last annual entry, for 1895/96, the list of 1896/97 (AH 1314) gives the status word Vefat (death).
