Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1845/46 (AH 1262) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Mithat Efendi was the child of a merchant (tüccar). Work began in the Defteri Hakani Kalemi in Istanbul in 1857/58, at about 12, on a first salary of 150 kuruş. Fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 12 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1859/60, with Mehmet Mithat in the Kuyud Odasi in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1862/63. Mehmet Mithat then moved to seven places in 13 years, from Razgrad (Hezargrad) to Tripoli (Trablusgarp), with a rise to a post in the land office (Arazi Kalemi) in 1863/64 and to DH Muduru in 1873/74. The last posts were in Kastamonu from 1876 to 1880, first in the Land Registry office (Defter-i Hakani Kalemi), from 1879/80 as Vergi Emaneti Baskitabeti. The posts lie on three continents, Africa, Asia and Europe, as for fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1859/60 to a peak of 3,000 in 1873/74, as DH Muduru in Tripoli, when 96 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 1,000 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1879/80.
