Life#
Hasan Kamil Efendi was born in Yozgat in 1845/46 (AH 1262), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Kastamonu in 1867/68, at about 21, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1870/71, with Hasan Kamil as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Araç, where the entries run to 1880/81. Hasan Kamil then moved to Kastamonu and İskilip from 1881 to 1886, then back to Araç from 1888 to 1894. The lists have no entry for 1886 to 1888. Next came Akçakoca (Akçaşehir), Sinop and Deliklitas from 1894 to 1899. The last post was in Manavgat in 1899/1900. A career like this is rare; fewer than 7 per cent of the 775 officials whose entries span 30 years or more kept one title throughout.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1870/71 to 400 in 1876/77, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Araç, when 17 per cent of paid officials earned less.
