Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1876/77 (AH 1293), this official came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army captain (yüzbaşı). Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; the official also attended the telegraph school and wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.
Work began in Istanbul in 1890/91, at about 15, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 750 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1893/94, places the official in Cide as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The official then moved to Çorlu in 1894/95, then Sinop from 1895 to 1900. The last posts were in Istanbul in 1900/01, as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur), and Ankara in 1901/02 and Thessaloniki (Selanik) from 1902 to 1904.
The salary went from 750 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to 800 in 1900/01, the peak, as Seyyar Memur in Istanbul, when 81 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 700 kuruş. Over 11 years pay ended below where it began, 700 kuruş against 750. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
