Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hüseyin Avni Efendi was the child of a telegraph director (telgraf müdürü). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Hüseyin Avni began work in Bursa in 1890/91, at about 15, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1893/94, places Hüseyin Avni in Bursa as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1900/01. The last posts were in Afyonkarahisar in 1901/02 and Ilgın from 1902 to 1904.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1893/94, as Muhabere Memuru in Bursa, when 17 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 11 years pay ended below where it began, 200 kuruş against 300. In all, 11 years of salary come to 36,600 kuruş, 55 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
