Life#
Born in Lubnan in 1872/73 (AH 1289) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hüseyin Hüsnü Efendi was the child of a senior army captain (kolağası). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Hüseyin Hüsnü also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish and spoke French, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 19, in 1891/92, Hüseyin Hüsnü began work in Bursa, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. From 1891/92 to 1904/05 every annual entry places Hüseyin Hüsnü in Bursa, first as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), from 1893/94 as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) and from 1898/99 in the clerkship of the chief director's office (Başmüdür Kitabeti).
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to 580 in 1904/05, the peak, in the Başmüdür Kitabeti in Bursa, when two in three paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
