Life#
Abdullah Arif Efendi was born in Konya in 1872/73 (AH 1289) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a farmer (çiftçi). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Konya in 1887/88, at about 16, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1893/94, places Abdullah Arif in Kadınhanı as a postal official (Posta Memuru). The annual lists then follow Abdullah Arif to Konya and Kırşehir from 1894 to 1898, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1894/95. The last posts were in Ereğli from 1898 to 1904, with a rise to acting director (Müdür Vekili).
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to 600 in 1900/01, the peak, as Müdür Vekili in Ereğli, when 67 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
