Life#
Süleyman Vehbi Efendi was born in Çemişgezek in 1860/61 (AH 1277) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Soufli (Sofulu) in 1887/88, at about 27, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1888/89, places Süleyman Vehbi in Soufli as a transport official (Nakliye Memuru). The annual lists then follow Süleyman Vehbi to Edirne and Uzunköprü (Cisr-i Ergene) from 1889 to 1892, then Niğde from 1892 to 1903, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last post was in Ereğli in 1903/04, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to a peak of 540 in 1903/04, as 3. Müdür in Ereğli, when 61 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1903/04. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl defterlerine göre çemişgezekli devlet memurları" by YETER ÖZDEMİR BIYIK (2024) probably refers to Süleyman Vehbi, since the name and the birthplace agree.
