Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1860/61 (AH 1277) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Emin Efendi was the child of a director (müdür). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Emin also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Emin began work in Istanbul in 1882/83, at about 22, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1888/89, places Emin in Babi seraskeri as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). From 1889 to 1907 every annual entry places Emin in Istanbul, the birthplace.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to 400 in 1906/07, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Istanbul, when 39 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 19 years of salary come to 66,240 kuruş, 59 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
