Life#
Born in Măcin (Maçin) in 1860/61 (AH 1277), Ali Rıza Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a customs official (rüsumat memuru). Ali Rıza had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 26, in 1886/87, Ali Rıza began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. From 1888/89 to 1898/99 every annual entry places Ali Rıza in Istanbul, first as a postal official (Posta Memuru), from 1894/95 in the stamp clerkship (Pul Kitabeti).
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to a peak of 220 in 1898/99, in the Pul Kitabeti in Istanbul, when 12 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 11 years the salaries add up to 21,840 kuruş, 33 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1898/99.
