Life#
Born in Măcin (Maçin) in 1879/80 (AH 1297), Mustafa Fuat Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a clerk (ketebe). Mustafa Fuat had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1895/96, at about 16, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1898/99, places Mustafa Fuat in Istanbul as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Beirut (Beyrut) from 1900 to 1904 and Bilecik in 1904/05.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1898/99 to 400 in 1900/01, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Beirut, when 31 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, seven years of salary come to 26,400 kuruş, 64 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
