Life#
Abdullah Agah Efendi was born in Varna in 1879/80 (AH 1297) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Abdullah Agah also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Abdullah Agah began work in Bandırma in 1896/97, at about 16, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1901/02, places Abdullah Agah in Damascus (Şam) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Çanakkale and Edirne from 1902 to 1906 and Balıkesir in 1906/07.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1901/02 to 500 in 1905/06, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Edirne, when half the paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 400 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1906/07. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl Defterlerine göre Osmanlı bürokrasisinde Varnalı devlet adamları" by İSA ÖZHAN (2024) probably refers to Abdullah Agah, since the name, the birthplace and the archive register and page agree.
