Life#
Abdülmecid Efendi was born in Van in 1879/80 (AH 1297) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Sandik Emini". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Abdülmecid also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Kalecik in 1892/93, at about 13, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. Few began so young; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 13 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1896/97, with Abdülmecid as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Başkale. Abdülmecid then moved to Muş, Malazgirt, Sarikoy, Tarsus and Ermenek, five places in nine years. The last post was in Karacabey (Mihaliç) in 1906/07.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to 690 in 1902/03, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Tarsus, when three in four paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
