Life#
Born in Neapoli (Nasliç) in 1879/80 (AH 1297) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ali Riza Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Work began in Neapoli in 1895/96, at about 16, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1896/97, places Ali Riza in Larissa (Yenişehir-i Fener) as a deliverer (Müvezzi). The annual lists then follow Ali Riza to Mecca (Mekke), Jeddah (Cidde) and Servia (Serfiçe) from 1898 to 1907, with a rise to postal official (Posta Memuru) in 1898/99 and to official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in 1901/02. The last post was in Kozani (Kozana) in 1907/08. The farthest post, Mecca, lay about 2,750 km from Neapoli, and fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to 600 in 1901/02, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Jeddah, when two in three paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
