Life#
Born in Zile in 1884/85 (AH 1302) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Tevfik Efendi was the child of a sergeant (çavuş). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Mehmet Tevfik began work in Tokat in 1903/04, at about 18, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1904/05, places Mehmet Tevfik in Servia (Serfiçe) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last post was in Eleşkirt in 1906/07.
