Life#
Abdülkadir Hifzi Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1884/85 (AH 1302) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Evkaf-i Humayun Hademesi". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Abdülkadir Hifzi also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in the Dahiliye Kalemi in Istanbul in 1899/1900, at about 15, paid from the start, on 20 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1899/1900, with Abdülkadir Hifzi in the Memurin Kitabeti in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1903/04. In 1904/05 the lists place Abdülkadir Hifzi in Tripoli (Trablusşam), with a rise to postal official (Posta Memuru).
Pay rose from 20 kuruş a month in 1899/1900 to a peak of 380 in 1904/05, as Posta Memuru in Tripoli, when 35 per cent of paid officials earned less.
