Life#
Born in Izmir (İzmir) in 1881/82 (AH 1299), Devidras Avram Efendi came from the Jewish (Musevi) community; the father's occupation was "Dellal". Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Devidras Avram also wrote French as well as Turkish.
Work began in Istanbul in 1898/99, at about 16, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1899/1900, places Devidras Avram in Istanbul as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). Devidras Avram then moved to nine places in 12 years, from Beirut (Beyrut) to Galata, with a rise to a post in the clerkship of the chief director's office (Başmüdür Kitabeti) in 1906/07. The last post was in Tarabya in 1911/12. In all, 11 places on two continents, a number reached by fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1899/1900 to a peak of 800 in 1906/07, in the Başmüdür Kitabeti in Aydın, when 78 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 500 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1911/12.
