Life#
Mustafa Efendi was born in Aleppo (Halep) in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a farmer (çiftçi). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mustafa also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.
Mustafa began work in Besni (Behisni) in 1894/95, at about 18, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. Fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for seven years or longer. The first annual entry, for 1901/02, places Mustafa in Gümüşhane as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Erzurum from 1902 to 1905 and Ağrı (Karakilise) in 1905/06.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1901/02 to a peak of 500 in 1905/06, as Muhabere Memuru in Ağrı, when half the paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
