Life#
Osman Nazım Efendi was born in Gümüşhane in 1878/79 (AH 1296) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph director (telgraf müdürü). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Osman Nazım began work in Tokat in 1891/92, at about 13, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 6 per cent started at 13 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1895/96, places Osman Nazım in Sivas as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The lists have no entry for 1896 to 1902. The last posts were in Erzurum from 1902 to 1904 and Trgovište (Tırgovişte) in 1905/06.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to a peak of 500 in 1905/06, as 3. Müdür in Trgovište, when half the paid officials earned less. In all, four years of salary come to 17,280 kuruş, 73 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
