Life#
Mehmet Tevfik Efendi was born in Sivas in 1878 (AH 1295) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1893/94, Mehmet Tevfik began work in Sivas, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1895/96 to 1902/03 places Mehmet Tevfik in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Sivas, the birthplace.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to a peak of 400 in 1902/03, as Muhabere Memuru in Sivas, when one in three paid officials earned less.
