Life#
Ahmed İzzet Efendi was born in Koy Sanjaq (Köysancak) in 1878 (AH 1295), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Rawanduz (Revanduz) in 1891/92, at about 14, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, fewer than 6 per cent worked unpaid for seven years or longer. The annual lists begin in 1898/99, with Ahmed İzzet as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Rawanduz. From 1899 to 1907 the annual entries place Ahmed İzzet in Erbil.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1898/99 to a peak of 360 in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Erbil, when 38 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, nine years of salary come to 32,520 kuruş, 62 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
