Life#
Born in Amasya in 1878 (AH 1295), İbrahim Ethem Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph director (telgraf müdürü). Work began in Amasya in 1888/89, at about 11, with ten unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, fewer than 2 per cent worked unpaid for ten years or longer. Fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 11 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1898/99, with İbrahim Ethem as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Karadeniz Ereğli, where the entries run to 1900/01. Next came Alacaagiz, Amasya and Niksar from 1901 to 1907. The last post was in Akdağmadeni (Akdağ) in 1907/08, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1898/99 to a peak of 500 in 1907/08, as 3. Müdür in Akdağmadeni, when 65 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1907/08.
