Life#
Born in Amasya in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ziya Efendi was the child of a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Work began in Arga in 1894/95, at about 18, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1896/97, places Ziya in İskenderun as a postal official (Posta Memuru), where the entries run to 1899/1900. The annual lists then follow Ziya to four places in six years. The last post was in Gaza (Gazze) in 1906/07. Few officials served on three continents (Africa, Asia and Europe); fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did. Suakin, about 2,400 km from Amasya, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to a peak of 900 in 1905/06, as Muhabere Memuru in Suakin, when 83 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 650 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1906/07. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahval kayıtlarına göre Amasyalı memurlar" by SELÇUK SARI (2013) probably refers to Ziya, since the name and the birthplace agree.
