Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1876/77 (AH 1293), Yakup Cemalettin Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Mezraa in 1889/90, at about 14, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1893/94, with Yakup Cemalettin as a director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in Mezraa. Yakup Cemalettin then moved to Antakya, İskenderun, Hicaz and Of, four places in 12 years. The last post was in Izmir (İzmir) in 1906/07, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur). The farthest post, Hicaz, lay about 2,400 km from Istanbul, and fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.
The salary went from 500 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to 1,000 in 1901/02, the peak, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Hicaz, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
