Life

Ahmet Nefi Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Asakir-i sahane Muduriyeti". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).

At about 17, in 1893/94, Ahmet Nefi began work in Istanbul, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1897/98, to 1901/02, every annual entry places Ahmet Nefi in the same office, documents office (Evrak Kalemi), in Istanbul, the birthplace.

Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1897/98 to a peak of 150 in 1899/1900, in the Evrak Kalemi in Istanbul, when 4 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over five years the salaries add up to 7,200 kuruş, 24 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1901/02.
